Kolkata Christmas 2026: Park Street, St. Paul's & More!


December is the last month of the year and this month brings peace and happiness. The weather becomes cool and all the people start preparing for the holiday season. The cold winter breeze, twinkling lights and festive mood make December special for everyone. Among all the festivals, Christmas is the most loved and awaited celebration of this month. Christmas is celebrated every year on 25th December to mark the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ. Children eagerly wait for Santa Claus, who is believed to bring gifts for them. Some people decorate their houses with lights, stars, candles and Christmas trees. Christmas Tree is decorated with colourful ornaments, bells and a shining star at the top.

During the festive season, Kolkata shines with lights, music, and happiness. The city looks bright and happy, and people enjoy the season together. Though it is a Christian festival, people of all the religions in Kolkata join in the celebration, making it one of the most happiest times of the year. The entire city glows with a festive mood.

1. Park Street

When it comes to Christmas celebrations, then Park Street is undoubtedly the most happening place in the city. The beautiful themed lights stretch from St. Xavier’s College to Jawaharlal Nehru Road. In recent years, the display has grown even bigger — now reaching from the Mullick Bazar crossing on Park Street to St. Paul’s Cathedral on Cathedral Road. The festive decorations have also spread to Vardaan Market on Camac Street, adding even more sparkle to the celebrations. 

The entire stretch dazzles with colourful lights. Kolkata Christmas Festival organized by the State Tourism Department in 2011. People wearing Santa Hats, enjoying food and clicking photos under those beautiful lights make Park Street look like a fairy-tale world.


2. St. Paul’s Cathedral

Among many places that make Christmas in Kolkata truly special, then obviously St. Paul’s Cathedral Church holds a remarkable place.

Located near the iconic Victoria Memorial, St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the oldest and most magnificent churches in India.

The church premises are beautifully decorated with fairy lights, Christmas trees on Christmas Eve and on that day, hundreds of people—both Christians and non-Christians—gather to attend the Midnight Mass.

On Christmas morning, the Cathedral is filled with prayers, hymns, and the fragrance of incense. The surrounding area, especially around Maidan and Park Street, buzzes with festive cheer—people dressed in red and white, enjoying cakes, pastries, and Christmas music.

3. Sreebhumi

Another popular destination that has recently become a highlight of Christmas Of Kolkata is Sreebhumi. During this time, Sreebhumi gets transformed into a dazzling zone of lights and decorations, which is why it is often called the “Mini Park Street” of North Kolkata. The whole area looks truly magical. The beautiful decoration and well-organized arrangements are made possible under the guidance of Sujit Bose, the local MLA.

Along with the Christmas celebrations, Sreebhumi also hosts the Poush Parbon Mela, which adds a traditional Bengali touch to the winter festivities. The fair features stalls selling Bengali sweets, Pithe, Patishapta, handicrafts, winter delicacies, and traditional items that reflect Bengal’s rich culture. The combination of Christmas lights and the Poush Parbon Mela makes Sreebhumi a must-visit destination during December.

Kolkata truly lives up to its name — The City of Joy — during Christmas. The cool winter breeze, the aroma of freshly baked cakes, and the glowing decorations make Christmas one of the most beautiful times of the year in Kolkata. Christmas feels like stepping into a dream — live music fills the air, people wear Santa hats, and the streets are filled with joy and laughter. Shops, restaurants, and bakeries like Flurys, Monginis, Mio Amore, Just Baked etc are packed with people enjoying fruit cakes, pastries, roast meat, and hot coffee. 

Apart from Park Street, another must visit place is Bow Barracks, located near Bowbazar. This old Anglo-Indian area is famous for its joyful Christmas celebrations. The red-brick buildings are decorated with fairy lights, and you can hear music, laughter, and Christmas songs everywhere. People enjoy homemade cakes, puddings, and the warm, friendly spirit of the people of Kolkata.

For those who love shopping and lights, New Market (Hogg Market) is a must-visit. It is one of the oldest markets in the city and becomes beautifully decorated during Christmas. From Santa hats to cakes and decorations, everything related to Christmas can be found here.

Apart from these, places like Eco Park, Alipore Zoo, Victoria Memorial, Princep Ghat, Millennium Park, Mother Teresa House, Park Circus Maidan, Mother's Wax Museum and different shopping malls like Quest Mall, South City Mall, Acropolis Mall, Mani Square, City Centre 1 & 2, Diamond Plaza Mall etc also host Christmas-themed events and decorations that make them perfect spots for families, friends and couples to visit.

In short, Christmas of Kolkata is not limited to Park Street alone. The joy of the season spreads across the entire city—from churches to local neighborhoods, malls to parks.
