Jagadhatri Puja 2025 - The Ending of the Festive Vibes

The Jagadhatri puja of Chandannagar has a dedicated fan base, as it marks the end of the festive season in Bengal. During the celebration of Jagadhatri Puja, the city shows its true colours in terms of light and devotion. If you are planning to visit Chandannagar during this festive season, you are likely to have the best experience of the town, with its rich cultural heritage. The city welcomes everyone with positive warmth and togetherness.

Did you know why Jagadhatri Puja is celebrated?

To be very honest, long ago, the culture of Jagadhatri puja of Chandanná¹…agar didn't even exist; it just happened to be that Maharaj Krishnachandra of Nadia was deeply saddened by the fact that he missed Durga puja upon his release from captivity for failing to pay taxes to Siraj-ul-daula. The night of his release, he was returning on a boat and had a dream of goddess Durga as a young child; she instructed him to worship her on the ninth day of Kartik Purnima. Since then, he started Jagadhatri Puja in the 18th century in remembrance of a form of Ma Durga.

During the four-day celebration of Maa Jagadhatri, Chandannagar attracts a massive crowd as the city welcomes everyone with attractive lighting, food stalls, theme pandals and much more. The main highlight of the festival comes on Dashami(the last day of Jagadhatri Puja), after which the immersion of Maa begins. You can also treat the immersion of Maa Jagadhatri as a separate festival, as the procession is worth watching once in a lifetime, a long heavy-duty vehicle with attractive decoration carrying the idols with loud music, crackers and much more. The city goes dark during the emersion, the idols are tall as to avoid any kind of accident due to electrification.

How is Chandannagar preparing this year to welcome Maa?

The air in Chandannagar this year is thick with a particular kind of joyous, focused energy. The former French colony is preparing a month after Durga Puja to welcome Maa Jagadhatri.

1.The Symphony of Creation

The most obvious preparation is an anxious, city-wide spate of artistic buildings.
The Race of Heights: From Baghbazar to Boropanchantala, artisans work day and night to impart the classic, towering idols their characteristic, golden-colored shape. This year, the unspoken competition among the Barowari (community) committees is strong, testing limits on sheer size and fine shola (Indian cork) ornamentation of the Mother and her lion.
A Second Round of Themes: Unlike elsewhere, Chandannagar tends to leverage its big festival to prolong the artistic fervour of the Bengali festive period. Pandals are hence being carefully built out—with some boasting ambitious new themes of their own, while others cleverly reusing successful art installations from Kolkata's Durga Puja, providing them with a new, grand platform for the second time.

2. The Electric Heartbeat of the City

The real heart of Chandannagar's preparation is the light. Chandannagar is being rewired, block by block, to fulfil its status as the world capital of fancy lighting.
The Light-Artists' Studio: The mythical local light committees are buffing their newest animated light spectacles. Ditch static bulbs; the goal is to produce dynamic, narrative tableaux—whether a shining replica of a world monument or a cultural tale. These light frames constitute the city's essence, and their reveal is the most awaited moment.
The Grand Runway: Preparations for the Immersion Procession (Visarjan Parikrama) are an enormous task. Truck chassis are being reinforced and tailored to transport the gigantic idols and the blinding, heavy light panels that will proceed deliberately along the GT Road—a procession that has come to be described as a hypnotic, slow-moving gallery of light.

3. Logistical Choreography and Nostalgia

Aside from the spectacle of the art, there is a gargantuan effort to contain the crowd of devotees and spectators.
Crowd Readiness: Grassroots organizers, famous for their professional handling, are working together with the administration to demarcate clean viewing corridors, control traffic congestion, and provide pedestrian protection along the jam-packed streets, expecting an even bigger crowd this year.
The Scent of Tradition: In the quieter, older-world Bonedi Baris, the preparation is less complex but richer. Family courtyards are being scrubbed, and cooks are preparing the multi-day bhog (offering) menu, insuring the traditional, peaceful worship of the goddess is kept alive in the middle of the modern spectacle that is just beyond their gates.
