The Giant "Bear" of Kolkata: Meet the Tupolev Tu-142M
The main feature of this museum is the massive Tupolev Tu-142M. Trust me, when you stand next to it, you feel small!
This isn’t just any plane; it’s a piece of history. Nicknamed the "Bear" by NATO, this Soviet-era long-range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft served the Indian Navy faithfully for 29 years, from 1988 to 2017.
Why is it special?
- The Loudest Plane: It is known for being one of the loudest aircraft in the world.
- The Propellers: It has four huge engines with contra-rotating propellers, meaning two propellers on one engine spin in opposite directions. This engineering wonder gave it the speed and power to patrol our oceans.
- The Legacy: It logged over 30,000 hours of accident-free flight time. That’s an impressive safety record!
From Tamil Nadu to New Town: A Journey on Wheels
You might wonder, how did a massive naval aircraft end up in the middle of a city?
After it was decommissioned in 2017, the West Bengal government, through the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, worked to preserve this piece of history. But flying it here wasn't an option.
The aircraft was dismantled at INS Rajali in Tamil Nadu and transported to Kolkata in six large pieces on heavy trucks. It traveled thousands of kilometers by road! Once it arrived at the 2.2-acre site in New Town, a team of experts carefully reassembled it, piece by piece, to restore it to its original condition.
The project, costing about ₹11 Crores, was inaugurated by our Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on June 8, 2022.
Step Inside: What to Expect at the Aircraft Museum Kolkata
Walking into the museum feels like stepping into a mini naval base. The setup is clean, green, and highly organized.
1. The Exterior Walk:
First, you can walk around the aircraft. This is the best time to admire the impressive wingspan and those huge propellers. It’s perfect for photography!
2. Inside the Belly of the Beast:
You can actually go inside! A staircase leads you into the main fuselage.
- The Cockpit: You can look into the pilot's cabin. Seeing the array of analog dials, switches, and levers gives you chills thinking about the pilots who flew this plane for 10-12 hours straight.
- The Weaponry: The museum displays the "teeth" of the Bear, including bombs, torpedoes, and survival kits used by the navy.
- The Crew: Life-sized models of pilots and navigators are set up inside, dressed in complete flight gear, making the experience feel very real.
3. The Surroundings:
The KMDA didn’t just park a plane and leave; they designed a nice environment around it.
- Children’s Park: If you’re visiting with kids, there’s a lovely play area where they can burn off some energy while you admire the plane.
- Coffee Shop: There’s a small cafeteria serving tea, coffee, and snacks. It’s great for a quick break after the tour.
